V8-Powered Pickup Trucks Ranked By Reliability
Trucks are all about working hard, hauling loads, and towing big rigs, especially the full-size trucks where you’ll find rivals such as the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 duke it out for class honors. Reliability is a very important ingredient in this recipe, because the workhorse variants of these trucks often cover long distances at all hours on any type of road and in the worst weather, so you want a dependable truck. Even if only called upon for family duty, you don’t want it breaking down with your loved ones on board.

America’s Full-Size Pickup Trucks Ranked By Reliability
On the market for a full-size pickup? Here are the least and most reliable models available
V8 engines are still very much an American staple, but they have been disappearing of late. They’re still common among heavy-duty trucks. GM has committed to developing a next generation of LS V8, while others like Stellantis are doing away with V8s in their regular full-size trucks altogether, replacing them with more efficient turbocharged six-cylinder engines. So, while we still have enough V8-powered full-size and HD trucks around to fill this list, let’s see which ones are the most reliable.

Every V8-Powered Pickup Truck In America Ranked By Power Output
The V8 pickup truck isn’t dead yet, so let’s celebrate the most powerful of them before they’re gone.
We assess trucks available with gas or diesel V8 engines. NHTSA recall and complaint data are from the 2024 and 2025 model years, except for the Ram 1500, which has a V8 engine up to MY2024 only, and the Nissan Titan, whose last model year is 2024. Where 2024 or 2025 data aren’t available for the others, we’ll use 2023 data or, lacking that, 2022 data. None of these trucks have been redesigned since 2021, so newer data than that should still provide a fairly accurate indication of reliability. We rank them according to J.D. Power’s score for the 2025 Quality & Reliability assessment, with NHTSA recalls and complaints acting as a tiebreaker where trucks score equally. All data were accurate at the time of publication.

The GMC Sierra HD was redesigned five years ago, and its J.D. Power Quality & Reliability score of 75 out of 100 isn’t bad, but it’s the lowest of the trucks here. The 2500 registered no complaints or recalls registered for 2025, but the 2025 3500 has not yet been evaluated. Both were evaluated for 2024, which resulted in two recalls for both; 29 complaints for the 2500, and 12 complaints for the 3500.

Proof, once again, that the top-selling vehicle isn’t necessarily the most reliable one. No 2024 or 2025 J.D. Power score is available for the F-150, but the last time it was evaluated for MY2023, it scored 78 out of 100 for Quality & Reliability, but even a small improvement in the meantime wouldn’t have pushed it much further up this list. Thankfully, there weren’t too many recalls or complaints.

The recent reliability data for the Ram HD are thin on the ground, and the freshest score of 79 out of 100 from J.D. Power belongs to the MY2022 2500. It might have improved by now, but it would have to be by a substantial two percentage points to challenge the next-higher truck, so its position on this list is probably safe for now. The 3500 has no J.D. Power score at all for the last couple of years, but with the same powertrain, we expect it to fare similarly.

The 2024 Titan will be the last model year of the truck, as Nissan is discontinuing it, so we only provide 2024 data here. The Titan’s J.D. Power Quality & Reliability score is a very good 81 out of 100, but it took an unfortunate dive from the 2023’s model’s 88; had it been able to keep that up, it would have scored much higher on this list. The reason why we group the Titan XD with the regular Titan here is because it doesn’t have a J.D. Power score, but it is mechanically identical to the regular Titan and suffered even fewer recalls and complaints, so it’s at least as reliable, if not better, even if we don’t have a score to go on.

Nissan Titan Axed After Pickup Truck Posts Poor Sales
The Nissan Titan’s production is slated to end summer of 2024 at the Canton plant in Mississippi.
If there’s one thing that counts against the Titan, it’s the lack of choice, with only two body styles – King Cab and Crew Cab – to choose from, as well as two bed lengths. There’s only a single engine too, a naturally aspirated gas V8, with no diesel option offered at all. But the Titan XD is disappointing as a heavy-duty truck, which perhaps help explain the poor sales. It can only tow a maximum of about 11,000 pounds, whereas the latest Ford Super Duty is capable of 40,000 pounds, so it’s been thoroughly outclassed in its segment.

The F-Series Super Duty fares significantly better than the light-duty F-150, even if the F-250’s J.D. Power score is now a few years old, with the most recent one coming from MY2022. We’re confident that it’s still in that league, as there were no recalls for the past few years, no complaints for the 2025 model, and only eight for the 2024 models. It’s still the same generation without a redesign as well, but we place it below the similarly scored GMC Sierra 1500, because the Sierra’s score is more recent. There’s no score for the F-350, but exactly the same configurations and powertrains are offered, with the F-350 rated for higher loads and harder work, so their scores should be all but identical. A comparable lack of recalls supports this notion.

The GMC Sierra might have scored the same as the F-Series Super Duty, but the Sierra’s score is two years newer and thus more relevant and valid, so it finishes ahead of the Ford on this list. There have been quite a number of complaints for the 2024 model, but no recalls have been registered at the time of writing.
The two gas engines are both naturally aspirated V8s with up to 420 hp, but a high-torque turbo-diesel six-pot is offered as well. As is common in this class, the Sierra 1500 comes with the expected choice of three body styles – regular, double, and crew cab – and three bed sizes.

The Silverado HD performs very well in the reliability stakes, with the 2500 HD scoring an excellent 85 out of 100 for Quality & Reliability at J.D. Power – inexplicably a full ten percentage points better than its supposedly identical and more upmarket GMC Sierra HD twin. There’s no score for the 3500 HD, but it’s an identical truck in all respects, with the same powertrains, except for the latter being rated for higher payloads and towing numbers, and coming with dual rear wheels. In fact, with the same number of recalls and 31 fewer complaints (2024 figures), the 3500 HD might score even better than the 2500 HD, but without an official rating, we put them on an even keel.

In an unexpected turn of events, two Ram products top this list. The Ram 1500 Classic is the previous-generation Ram truck that debuted 15 years ago that still soldiers on at the bottom of the lineup. But with only a 2024 model listed on the Ram website and NHTSA data that run up to MY2023, it doesn’t look like it will be around for the 2025 model year. So, on the strength of the 2024 model’s excellent results, it comes second on this list, with a score of 88 out of 100 for Quality & Reliability. Even though the Chevy Silverado HD has a newer 2025 score, it’s three percentage points lower, so the Silverado can’t topple the 1500 Classic from the second step of the podium.
