Lamborghini Lanzador’s Future Will Be Decided By The End Of The Year
The Lamborghini Lanzador Concept made a splash when it debuted two years ago, particularly because it was supposed to preview the Italian marque’s first EV… until it wasn’t. Apart from confirmed delays to its arrival, Lamborghini hasn’t exactly decided whether to keep it pure electric or to put some kind of internal combustion engine into the setup. Thankfully, it won’t be long until we hear something concrete.
In an interview with The Drive, Lamborghini Chief Technology Officer Rouven Mohr didn’t confirm whether a plug-in hybrid version of the Lanzador – similar to the Revuelto and Urus SE – is happening, but he stated that they “are not closing the door to any option.” Mohr added that they are being very careful with their decision about the Lanzador since Lamborghini can’t customize it to fit every market.
“So we have to be very careful which choice we make for the entire world and this decision is not yet taken. It’s right. We will make it by end of the year most likely.”
– Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini chief technology officer
Plug-In Hybrid or Full Electric, That Is The Question
Obviously, the waning demand for high-end, performance EVs doesn’t bode well for the electric Lanzador. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann very much confirmed this in July, saying that the company had to rethink its first take on the model. Initially, the production version of the Lanzador was slated to be a 2,000-horsepower EV, surpassing the Bugatti Tourbillon’s power output, thanks to a new, high-performance electric platform.
As for the design, the switch to a plug-in hybrid setup, if it were to happen, would obviously need some adjustments to the concept. Mohr said that they are also deciding on this, especially in terms of details, but confirmed that it’s “possible to have a similar appearance, for sure.” The Lanzador Concept was introduced as a high-riding coupe, or an “Ultra GT,” although Mohr added that they are also deciding on the body type. The decision, of course, will depend on the powertrain.
A Very Crucial Decision For Lamborghini
Because of these decisions to be made, the production Lamborghini Lanzador has been delayed from 2028 to 2029. That seems far down this decade, but remember that Lamborghini’s currently busy with a record-setting couple of years due to the popularity of its recent offerings. In fact, the Revuelto is sold out through 2026, and the same story goes for the Urus SE this year.
That said, whatever Lambo decides to do with the Lanzador will be very crucial for the brand, especially since rivals already have the upper hand in terms of timing. We’re talking about Ferrari, of course, which is about to reveal its first EV this year. The Italian supercar company has a few months left to reach a final verdict and, as always, we’ll have an ear to the ground to give you the latest update.
