The Fastest Front-Wheel Drive Cars In America
Front-wheel-drive (FWD) cars might not have the same reputation for raw speed as their rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive counterparts, but they have evolved dramatically over the years. They’re no longer strictly options for those trying to save a few thousand dollars, as models like the Volkswagen GTI and Honda Civic Type R have shown that FWD cars can hang with RWD and AWD counterparts, and occasionally even beat them.
When it comes to FWD performance, most people are more concerned with how a car feels in the curves than how it does in a straight line, but many of these cars can reach impressive speeds when pushed hard, with some inching closer and closer to the 200 mph mark. Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or a curious buyer, these vehicles showcase the best that FWD engineering has to offer, and will scratch that performance itch you have without breaking the bank.

Volkswagen’s entry-level performance sedan has been an enthusiast’s best friend since it first arrived in the 1980s. With attractive styling, tons of practicality, good power, and precise steering, the GLI transforms mundane commutes into exciting journeys. Unfortunately, its top speed is a little disappointing, with VW limiting it to 126 mph perhaps in a bid to stop it from stepping on the GTI’s toes, but it has a leg up on that model for 2025, as it retains its six-speed manual, making it the only VW in the US that you can still row your own in.

The TLX is Acura’s sophisticated and attractive mid-size sedan that we often feel flies under the radar. The model competes against the likes of the 3 Series or A4, but it’s long proportions and tight interior dimensions make it a bit of an odd choice. While we could talk all day about the sporty, AWD Type S variant, it does come standard with FWD and a turbocharged inline four that produces 272 horsepower. This is more than enough power for most people’s needs, and it will be enough to pilot you to 131 mph, making it just fast enough to make this list.

The Civic Si has been a constant in the US performance scene for decades now, and throughout that time it’s been one of the best ways of getting yourself something quick that doesn’t sacrifice practicality. We love the newest generation, because it not only offers much more refined looks compared to previous generations, but it still combines a 200 horsepower engine, FWD, and six-speed manual into a combo that we know and love. With a top speed of 135 mph, it’s not going to set any land records, but it will be the perfect daily driver if the Type R is out of reach.

Hyundai, and its sister brand Kia, have been changing the game with their attractive, powerful, and inexpensive vehicle offerings over the past few years. The Sonata is one of the brand’s longest running nameplates, and for 2024 it was given a welcome refresh that improved the exterior looks and interior technology. Fortunately, it still boasts up to 290 horsepower on the N-Line trim, which can catapult this sedan to 149 mph, according to Hyundai. It’s the perfect sleeper car, one that’s gotten a little bit cheaper for 2025.

The 2025 Mini Cooper Hardtop John Cooper Works (JCW) takes the iconic Mini formula and amplifies it with enough performance to get your blood pumping. Gone is the manual transmission and old 8-speed auto, and in their place is the 7-speed DCT that’s married to a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four that makes the same horsepower as before, but substantially more torque at 280 lb-ft. We’ll have to see how well that translates to the pavement, but once the front tires do get traction, they’ll take you all the way to 153 mph, five mph faster than the lesser Mini Cooper S Hardtop. Will it be worth the $38,200 price tag? Only time will tell.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI is a legend in the hot hatch world, and for good reason. It offers a near-perfect blend of practicality and performance, melding the best parts of two kinds of cars in one. Performance has steadily been increasing over the years, and today you now have 241 horsepower at your disposal to roast the front wheels. There are very few competitors that do all the GTI does as well as it does it, and reaching a top speed of 155 mph also helps to put it ahead. While the manual transmission is leaving us for 2025, the GTI will always have a place in our hearts.

The Hyundai Elantra N is the hottest combustion model Hyundai currently sells. Sure, it may be down on power to the Sonata, but its chassis has been honed much further, it is available with adaptive dampers for extra performance, and its looks are nearly as loud as its exhaust.

Its 276 horsepower is nothing to sniff at, and neither is the 155 mph limited top speed attainable with the manual or automatic transmission, but we won’t say it’s mind-blowing either. No, what is mind-blowing is the fact you can get all of this performance for just $33,960 for 2025, making it one of the best enthusiast’s deals in the industry.

$33,090 (2025) |
The 155-mph limiter is popular for various cars, as evidenced by the past few entrants. Since the K5 is really just Kia’s version of the Sonata, it’s no surprise its GT trim also has the same top speed, thanks to the same engine and drivetrain. While they’re very similar vehicles, however, we must say we do prefer the K5’s styling to the Sonata, even if the latter has received a facelift. The K5 looks angular and aggressive, wearing its performance aspirations better than the Sonata. Our only hope is the brand one-day combines the potent engine with the car’s optional torque-vectoring AWD system, but we won’t hold our breath.

Price (Starting) |
$52,600 (2025) |
The Acura Integra Type S combines the raw power of the Civic Type R with the sophistication of a luxury vehicle, and despite its high price, we can’t get enough of it. It embodies the performance image that Acura should have been leaning into for years thanks to offering vehicles like the NSX, but the brand always let slip through its fingers. Today, it’s taking the Type S sub-brand very seriously, and the Integra version is every bit as good as it should be and then some, and we imagine sitting in the comfortable sports seats and listening to the 3D Premium Audio system while cruising at 167 mph would be a dream.

And of course, sitting at the top (or bottom) of this list is none other than the Honda Civic Type R: the FWD hot hatch king. Since finally arriving stateside during the Civic’s previous generation, it’s set records, beat nearly every competitor, and captured hearts, as it’s proved you’re not defined by your drivetrain configuration. Despite offering slightly less power than its Acura counterpart, it apparently has a slightly higher top speed, once again reinforcing just how great of a deal it is.
