Porsche Might Find More Uses For The 911 GTS T-Hybrid’s Battery

The 2025 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS marks the first time the legendary sports car has ever had gas-electric power, but it seems likely that the so-called T-Hybrid system might make its way into other products in the company’s lineup. The Stuttgart-based automaker announced March 4 that it had acquired V4Drive GmbH, the battery manufacturer that builds the high-performance cells in the GTS’ battery. Furthermore, upon purchasing control from parent company VARTA AG, Porsche rebranded the battery manufacturer V4Smart, signifying its interest in finding further uses for the cells beyond automotive applications.

Porsche Will Build The Batteries In Multiple Locations

The high-performance lithium-ion cells, which are made in a cylindrical shape for flexible packaging, are currently built at a V4Smart facility in Ellwagen, Germany, but Porsche is also building a new production line for the technology at its battery center in the city of Nordlingen. According to the automaker, the existing Ellwangen site was established with significant input from Porsche (well before V4Smart changed hands and names) so both sites should run with similar levels of efficiency and quality. Nordlingen will begin constructing the cells in April.

In addition to rebranding the manufacturer, Porsche says that by integrating the entire process – cell chemistry, design, and production – it can provide a better product to “its customers,” an unspecified group that could include other members of the Volkswagen automotive empire, different carmakers entirely, aircraft and marine entities, or maybe even home backup power providers, à la the Genesis Home battery system. It’s also likely the German company will also allow the high-performance cell technology to spread to other products.

The 911 Turbo Is Getting Electrified

Already confirmed for T-Hybrid powertrain technology is the 2026 911 Turbo, which will also host a similar set of cosmetic and functional changes as the rest of the 911 lineup did for 2025. The compact V4Smart cells in the Carrera GTS power a tiny electric motor in the engine’s single turbocharger, as well as a permanently excited synchronous motor in the car’s eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Expect the 911 Turbo to get the same technology, only applied to its signature twin turbochargers, with output likely to rise compared to the 2025 model’s 572 horsepower – itself only a small upgrade over the GTS’ 532.

Porsche Hybrids Ranked From Slowest To Quickest

Porsche hybrids are all about performance. Here’s every model ranked by 0-60 mph time.

It seems likely that the compact, energy-dense batteries will show up in other Porsche models, though it’s not clear whether the V4Smart cells are appropriate for use in plug-in hybrids or merely the series-hybrid layout of the 911 GTS. Nevertheless, such a system would be a boon for an updated Cayenne or Panamera GTS, bringing more power and efficiency to those models’ twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8s that make 493 hp in their current mild-hybrid form. And in our dreams, Porsche would also make the T-Hybrid technology part of a 918 Spyder successor, though it’s likely such a vehicle would be all-electric instead, like the Mission X concept.
