Mugen’s Ultimate Honda Civic Type R Is A Carnival Of Carbon Fiber

Japanese automakers are getting ready to show off their latest and greatest ideas at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon. Mirroring its 2024 exhibition, Honda’s in-house tuner will present the Civic Type R Group B in January. This time, however, the souped-up Civic Type R has been tweaked for production and the show car will be its pre-production exhibition.

According to Mugen, the Civic Type R Group B was developed to be the “Ultimate Type R.” The company spent a year fine-tuning the hot hatch to further improve its performance for mass production. Given the popularity of the ultra-limited Civic Type R Group A (seen in the photo gallery at the bottom), the more aggressive Group B selection of parts should make Honda enthusiasts’ hearts flutter.

Tuned To Be The “Ultimate Type R”

Without touching the most-power-dense Honda engine in the Civic Type R, the Group B tuning focuses on aero parts and other mechanical attributes to elevate performance, using lightweight materials like carbon fiber and titanium. Just like the concept shown at the previous TAS, the production model comes with a carbon fiber hood, vents, front splitter, rear diffuser, and massive wing.

Differentiating it from the Group A kit, the Group B has louvers on the front fenders, while the mirror caps deviate with their wing-type design, which seems to be borrowed from a BMW M5. The taillight graphics are different, too, along with the playful Mugen decal on the sides. Other upgrades are found on the dampers, the new single-outlet titanium exhaust, the brake pads and rotors, and forged 19-inch BBS wheels.

Obviously, Mugen is keeping the oily details under wraps, including how far these added body kits and upgrades improve the already impressive performance of the red-badged Civic Hatchback. We also need to know how much these things cost, but given the use of composite material and the bevy of underbody enhancements, a huge premium is expected.
