Mazda’s SUVs Ranked By Popularity According To 2024 Sales
Mazda currently lists five crossovers and SUVs in their lineup, the mid-size CX-70 and CX-90 (the latter just the three-row version of the CX-70), the compact CX-5 and CX-50, and the subcompact CX-30. The brand listed its year-end sales report for 2024 in early January, boasting 424,382 sales, a new record for the brand, with SUVs making up the vast majority of sales, at 377,402.
Mazda
Mazda is a Japanese automaker founded in 1920 as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co and only started producing vehicles in 1931 when it made the Mazda-Go auto rickshaw. The Japanese automaker’s first official car arrived in May 1960 when the Mazda R360 launched, starting Mazda as we know it today, although the Mazda name was only adopted in 1984. Mazda has a rich history in motorsport, including the honor of being the only manufacturer to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a car not powered by a reciprocating engine.

Mazda’s growing popularity in recent years can be explained by a strong lineup of stylish, fun-to-drive cars, all selling at a reasonable price even as the cost of car ownership has gotten out of control in recent years. Here’s how Mazda’s SUVs stacked up in 2024.
The commentary based on the sales data sourced from the automaker’s own year-end report is entirely CarBuzz’s own analysis, with models listed in order from least to most sales.

At 10,678 units sold, the Mazda CX-70 brings up the rear for 2025, owing largely to the simple fact that it’s a brand-new model. The CX-70 launched January 30, 2024, and, while it is available in a range of ICE and hybrid trims, Mazda’s public sales report only provides the total nameplate sales. When we first drove this car last year, we were impressed with the fit and finish, with leather upholstery in every trim and quilted Nappa in the top trim. Between its luxury-lite interior options and impressive engine lineup, the CX-70 is a steal at this price, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see it climbing a little higher up the list by this time next year.

The CX-90 saw a significant sales spike for 2024, moving 54,676 units by the end of December, compared to 30,821 at the same time in 2023. The only changes Mazda made for the CX-90 this model year was to shift the trim lineup around. They got rid of the Preferred Plus and Turbo S, renamed the Premium as the Premium Sport, and added some stylish upgrades including 21-inch dark finish rims and blacked-out roof rails. Also, the base touchscreen is 12.3 inches now. When we drove it, we loved its styling, cabin, and performance, but negatives included the infotainment controls, the HVAC buttons, and the small center console.

Mazda CX-70 Vs. CX-90: The Obvious And Not-So-Obvious Differences Between Mazda’s Midsize SUVs
On the face of it, these two SUVs are remarkably similar – but are the differences hidden in the details?
The growth in sales likely owes to a few factors: this is a fairly new model, launching for the 2024 model year in April of 2023, meaning that 2024 benefits from a longer sales year. That, plus this is one of the cheapest three-row SUVs on the market with all-wheel drive. CarEdge recently reported an average new car price of $48,978 this January, up slightly from a few months prior, so a three-row SUV starting for under forty grand is certainly attractive.

Here’s how Mazda improved efficiency – with Toyota’s help.
Most likely as a direct result of the addition of a Hybrid option, the CX-50 saw a significant sales bump for 2024, selling nearly twice as many units as the 44,595 the brand had moved by December 2023. Like the CX-90, this is a relatively new model, but, launching in January 2022, it now has three full sales years behind it.

One of the older models in the Mazda SUV lineup, the CX-30 launched back in 2019 for the 2020 model year. This was another model that saw a significant sales uptick in 2024, from 77,075 the previous year to 96,515, despite Mazda having made no significant upgrades for the model year. The SUV was named on Car and Drivers’ Editors Choice list last year, but it earns awards constantly, so that doesn’t do much to explain the sales bump.

The simplest explanation may be that the list of SUVs to be had for under $25,000 is getting shorter and shorter, and $24,995 is looking like a better deal with each passing year, especially on a subcompact with standard all-wheel drive.

The CX-5 was the only Mazda SUV that actually saw a sales dip in 2024, down to 134,088 from 153,808 the previous year. The reason for this fall-off should be pretty easy to explain: the CX-5 is still in its second generation, which launched all the way back in 2016 for the 2017 model year. The upscale interior, optional 256-hp turbo engine, and solid handling have carried the car a long way, but, sooner or later, every vehicle is going to feel its age.

This is not to say that the SUV is dated, rather, the market for the current iteration of the CX-5 may simply be bottoming out, and anyone who bought a CX-5 in 2016 is probably looking at the newer CX-50 to replace it now.
Low Prices Are A Major Needle-Mover For Mazda
The strongest pattern we can identify from these numbers would also be the easiest pattern to guess before you even look at the sales figures: Mazda buyers like the more affordable models.

10 Of The Cheapest SUVs To Maintain
Fed up of forking out thousands of sky-high maintenance costs? If so, then you should consider jumping into one of these cost-conscious SUVs.
Key to Mazda’s appeal is that the brand sells budget cars that don’t feel like budget cars. Just look at the MX-5 Miata. How many brands can you name selling a convertible roadster for under thirty grand? Mazda SUVs punch well above their division when it comes to the quality they offer for the price, so it stands to reason that their most affordable models would tend to be their most popular. That they’re offering some of the most affordable all-wheel drive, hybrid, and three-row SUVs on the market has helped to keep the brand’s overall sales numbers looking very strong in turbulent times for the industry.
