Kia Sedan Models Evolution: 2004 Vs. 2024

Most car brands stay true and consistent to their roots. For example, jump into a BMW or Audi from 20 years ago, and then into a modern example, and you’ll find no end of similarities and similar styling habits. However, one brand has had to grow up quickly in order to change its once woeful public image, and this transformation has been a huge success. The brand in question is Kia. More specifically, Kia’s sedan models have undergone a massive transformation over the last few generations.

Not only has Kia had to adapt to American tastes and what the modern consumer expects, but over those same 20 years, the automotive landscape has changed dramatically. No longer are sedans the flavor of the month. In fact, they are considered to be somewhat dated and undesirable to many. However, instead of dropping their sedan range entirely, Kia has decided to update it, alongside its impressive array of SUV models.

Here’s a closer look at just how the Kia sedan range has evolved over the last 20 years.

A Closer Look At Kia’s Sedan Lineup From 2004

Kia took a simplistic ‘catch all’ approach to their sedan lineup in 2004, which helped them appeal to as wide a market as possible. Those with an economical head or lighter wallet would be directed toward the Kia Rio. This is a model which stayed with the brand for a number of decades, and was available in both hatchback and sedan guise. Its subcompact nature made it perfect for short urban commutes, first car duties, and ferrying a young family around.

Step up a notch, and Kia had the Spectra for you – a noticeably sportier looking four-door sedan, which was also available as a five-door hatch. Slightly larger and more powerful than the Rio, the Spectra was a more capable option, better for longer trips and for those that required the extra cabin space.

Moving away from the smaller cars, Kia boasted the Optima in the oh-so crowded mid-size segment, competing with the likes of Chevy’s Malibu, but with a price advantage. Much like the Rio, Kia’s Optima survived for many years, and was available across multiple generations.

The deepest of wallets, however, could walk past the prior sedans in a showroom and find themselves before Kia’s flagship sedan – the executive spec, full-size Kia Amanti. It didn’t sell half as well as the other three models, possibly because it was more expensive, and therefore competing with more premium brands, at a time when the Kia name had very few fans. However, it could just as easily be argued that the awkward Korean styling was just too different for the American market.

Here’s What Kia’s Sedan Lineup Looks Like In 2024

In following recent trends, Kia has dropped much of their sedan lineup in favor of prioritizing SUVs. Having said that, Kia has revealed the new K4, set to replace the Forte in the late summer of 2024. However, as it currently stands, the K5 and Forte are Kia’s only sedan models available for sale.

The new 2025 K5 continues to offer a unique and striking alternative in an otherwise stalwart segment.

The Forte is a sharp and stylish compact sedan, offered with both a 2.0-liter inline-four and turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four – the latter providing quite a startling 201 horsepower. The 2024 Kia K5 is larger in comparison, neatly fitting into the mid-size segment. Powering most trims of the K5 is a 191-hp turbocharged ‘four’, although the top-flight GT trim is equipped with a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four, capable of churning out a frankly huge 290 hp.

Although no longer on sale, we must make mention of the recently discontinued Kia Stinger. With an available V6, rear-wheel drive, and alluring looks, this car was a significant image-booster for the Korean marque. When it was on sale, it was the best Kia sedan by some margin.

Sedans Were Much More Relevant In 2004

The automotive landscape looked very different 20 years ago and Kia is no exception to that rule. Wind the clock back, and the backbone of Kia’s early success in America was built upon the diverse sedan offerings available. Fast-forward back to today, and that same diverse offering of models is still available, although now in SUV guise. Much like nearly all mass-market automakers, Kia now focuses on providing a wide range of SUV and crossover models, as that’s exactly what the market is looking for.

Another big name manufacturer following the same trend is Ford. Not only has Ford binned off all of their sedans, including the ever popular Fusion, but it is also cutting down on smaller models too. For example, the Ford Fiesta, which has been in production since 1976, has recently been ditched in favor of an SUV-heavy lineup.

When Kia first arrived on the scene in America, it was very much a budget brand. It still is, but Kia takes the approach in a totally different way now. The fact is, no new cars are ‘cheap’ anymore, thanks to the rising cost of just about everything, even the cheapest new cars are now fast approaching $20,000.

Due to this, customers expect more from cars, even budget cars like entry-level Kias. Furthermore, technology in cars has exploded in recent years too, so once again, expectations are higher, as everyone ‘needs’ a flashy infotainment screen, with wireless and heated everything.

By paying attention to the voice of the consumer, Kia has been able to develop desirable vehicles that offer unmatched value.

So, while Kia does indeed still make sedans at the most affordable end of the market, they no longer look like it. Aggressive front fascias, flashy interiors and startling machine-finished alloy wheels are all par for the course now. In comparison to the Kia models from 20 years ago, the difference is huge. Older Kia sedans were lucky to even get alloy wheels and electric windows – there is little chance Kia would get away with this approach in 2024.

Take the base-level 2024 Kia Forte LX as an example. As standard, the Kia is equipped with an eight-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview monitor, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, in addition to a plethora of high-tech safety gadgets, such as auto emergency braking technology. By comparison, the 2004 Kia Spectra LX boasted manual-wind windows for everyone, an AM/FM radio, and cupholders, front and rear.

In addition to the styling department, the area in which Kias have improved the most is probably interior quality. No longer is the interior just a practical place to be, but it’s also a stylish cabin, somewhere to enjoy being, with more than just the bare essentials on hand.

The materials used are of a much higher quality now. Jump in the driver’s seat of a 2004 Kia, and you’re likely to be greeted with hard and shiny plastics, with cheap thin carpets under your feet, and very pale cloth seats underneath you. In comparison, a modern Kia can come furnished with duo-tone leather seats, with gloss piano black dash inserts, and a whole array of gadgets and gizmos at your disposal.

Kia’s interiors have gone from looking like the cheap car they are, to practically being indistinguishable from the more premium products on the market.

A Closer Look At Kia’s Sedan Sales Figures: 2004 Vs. 2024

The comparison between 2004 and 2024 sales figures from Kia is an interesting one. The Kia Forte, as Kia’s affordable and entry-level sedan, shows impressive sales, with over 80,000 already logged for 2024. That’s considerably more than any model achieved in 2004, so does that tell us that sedans are in more demand right now?

Not exactly. The number of sales for the Forte are likely driven by two different factors. Firstly, owning a Kia is no longer the punchline it used to be – the brand has a fantastic reputation, it builds a brilliant product, and the brand’s public image is immeasurably better than it was 20 years ago. Also, the choice of sedans is slimmer, so naturally the sales won’t be spread out over so many models, thus bringing the Forte’s figures higher.

In comparison, more sedans in total were sold in America by Kia in 2004, but no single model enjoyed the same success as the Forte in 2024 – the closest was the mid-size Optima, with 53,492 sold throughout the entire year. The Rio and Spectra achieved remarkably similar sales, although the Rio includes both sedans and hatches, whereas Kia has separate sales figures for the four and five-door Spectra variants. Boasting a higher price, and competing with more established brands in the executive segment of the market, such as BMW and Audi, it only makes sense that the Amanti sold in fewer numbers. Having said that, almost 20,000 units shifted by the brand confirms that Kia did make a considerable dent in this market during 2004. Looking at today’s Kia sedan models by size, the brand no longer has a modern model to fill the Amanti’s role.

It’s worth noting that the 2024 figures are only a year-to-date figure, whereas the 2004 figures are for the complete year. This information was obtained in early September, so the 2024 figures should represent roughly three quarters of the full year’s figures, if sales continued along the same or similar projection.

Summary: Kia Is Fighting Hard To Keep The Sedan Segment Alive

There is no denying it, SUVs and crossovers are dominating the sales books for brands the world over. This is why it makes so much financial sense for automakers to drop their old-hat models, and jump on the SUV bandwagon. Kia has certainly jumped on, but they haven’t left their sedans for dead, unlike others.

Taking inspiration from their earlier models in 2004, Kia still caters to the cheaper end of the market, but it no longer makes cheap its entire personality. Instead, a modern Kia sedan is blessed with every bell and whistle one could wish for, including hot engines and sporty exteriors. The older sedans were merely tools of transport, whereas a modern Kia sedan is something you could genuinely take pride and pleasure in owning.
