Key Updates Across All Model Years

The first of the Lexus LX generations was launched in the US in 1995 as a premium full-size body-on-frame SUV based on the J80 Toyota Land Cruiser. It was only a light restyle of that car, and the second-generation J100 received more individualistic Lexus styling, boasting the then-typical quad Lexus headlights also seen on cars such as the GS. Over the years, every redesign of the Lexus LX was more its own car and less obviously a Toyota.

By far the longest-running LX was the third-generation J200, which ran for 14 model years and received two major facelifts along the way. Whereas the original car used a six-cylinder engine, all subsequent generations of the LX were gas V8s up until the latest, which has embraced downsized turbocharged technology with its twin-turbo V6 engine. Its focus on transporting passengers across three rows in the utmost comfort while providing genuine off-road ability has not changed over the decades.

2022-Now Lexus LX 4th Gen (J300)

Making its debut for the 2022 model year, the all-new J300-gen Lexus LX was a redesign from the ground up, riding on Toyota’s TNGA-F platform shared with its siblings within the Toyota family, such as the Toyota Land Cruiser (J300) and Toyota Sequoia (XK80). Also making its debut in the LX model lineup for the first time is the inclusion of an ‘F Sport’ trim, which replaces the front chrome ‘spindle’ grille with a dechromed version, along with sporty features seen on Lexus models in their F Sport guise. Engine choices are downsized to a 3.4L twin-turbocharged V6, including a hybrid model. Both receive a 10-speed automatic transmission.

A new body was introduced for the second-gen Lexus LX, which also added a 4.7L V8 engine alongside a V6 engine of the same size. A front independent suspension differentiated this LX from the first generation, improving its road manners.

1996-1997 Lexus LX 1st Gen (J80)

The Lexus LX’s first iteration, the J80 gen, debuted for the 1996 model year. Based heavily on the J80-gen Toyota Land Cruiser, but with more upmarket features as expected of a Lexus, it was powered by a 4.5L inline-six mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. Although it had a more luxurious interior than the Land Cruiser, this was still a rugged SUV under the skin, with solid axles both front and rear.
