High-Mileage Toyota Tundra V8 Engine Teardown Reveals One Small, Destructive Flaw
When it comes to V8 engines, Toyota has pretty much the same reputation as it does for its four- and six-cylinder units. Some are, obviously, better than others, but reliability is the word. The 3UR-FE (known as the Toyota 5.7L i-Force V8) engine is particularly evangelized for its robustness and closely related to the 1UR-FSE that debuted with the Lexus LS in 2006, but for use in utility-based vehicles.
In this case, the engine that Eric from the I Do Cars YouTube channel pulled apart is from a Toyota Tundra with 287,000 miles on the clock. In most instances, that would be a hugely impressive number. For a legendary Tundra V8, however, it’s barely a midlife crisis. This one should’ve gone further, and as the video shows, it would’ve done exactly save for one oddball failure. And actually, according to the salvage yard it came from, this engine was still running despite a bevy of bent valves.
A Lot Of Damage From One Small Issue
Oftentimes with engines, small problems can set off a chain reaction that leads to a big problem. In this case, a sheered off bolt holding the intake camshaft led to the destruction of said cam. That bolt failure apparently boils down to just dumb luck in this case, because the rest of the engine looks like it could go for another 100,000 miles easily. Why the bolt sheered is a mystery, but odds are it was just a one-in-a-million piece that had a metallurgical flaw and was destined to fail one day, causing damage further down the line.
It’s also possible that work was done in that area and the bolt wasn’t torqued correctly, but this looks like a fluke to us as well. You can see the engine was very well maintained and had recently had an oil change, judging by the oil filter looking clean and new. Suffice it to say, that must’ve added insult to injury for this Tundra owner.
Not A Perfect Engine
While the 3UR-FE V8 is a workhorse, it arrived with issues, including one with the cam assembly unit. The sealant on the cam tower failed on enough vehicles that there was a petition filed for Toyota to recall the engine and a law firm investigated the possibility of a class action lawsuit. It’s also a gas guzzler, which is a large part of the reason it wasn’t an option for the third-generation Tundra, replaced by the twin-turbo V6 for the 2022 model year. The 3UR-FE V8 stuck around for one more year in the Sequoia before being retired for good.

It Was So Good, Though
One of the biggest selling points for the Tundra, and the 3UR-FE V8, is that they were American-made. It was a bigger deal, however, because the 5.7-liter V8 made the kind of power Toyota needed in its trucks and SUVs. Back in 2007, 381 horsepower and 400 pound feet of torque made for competitive figures against Ford and Chevrolet’s dominance and helped Toyota grow sales. Toyota knew it needed to keep up its reliability image, and even X-ray scanned the aluminum engine blocks to ensure they were on-spec. It paid off, because the V8 Tundra earned one hell of a reputation and spawned success stories like the million-mile truck.
