Ferrari Puts Off Its Second Electric Sports Car To At Least 2028
Ferrari, which will bring out its first series-production EV in history later this year, has reportedly postponed its second electric car. The sophomore act was slated for a 2026 debut, but the Italian automaker has pushed its plans back until at least 2028, citing declining demand for pricey luxury EVs. We’re not sure the news has fallen on sad ears, however, as many of the Ferrari faithful prefer their sports cars loud, emotive, and characterful – like the 296 Speciale or F80 flagship.

Anonymous Insiders Say The Second EV Is In Limbo
Two sources with knowledge of Ferrari’s plans told Reuters that the automaker had planned to introduce its second EV about a year after the first one. However, one tipster said that there’s very little sustainable demand for a high-performance luxury EV, so the Prancing Horse will delay that second electric sports car until 2028 at the earliest. The new timing has a few advantages for Ferrari, like technology advancements in the intervening years that will make batteries lighter and electric sports cars more exciting to drive. Furthermore, the delay will also allow the company to suss out the right strategy an exclusive EV in order to find that sustainable market growth it wants.
Considering Ferrari’s first EV is expected to cost more than half a million bucks when it arrives on the market next year, we suspect the company is being rather cautious about its plans for the followup. Considering global demand for premium EVs has slowed down – resulting in the death of the Audi Q8 e-tron, among others – Ferrari needs to be very strategic once that initial rush of demand for any all-new sports car from Maranello tapers off.

Reuters’ sources refused to be identified, citing the sensitivity of the information they conveyed, and Ferrari didn’t comment on the rumor. For now, the company is marching toward its first EV’s debut, which is expected to begin in October with a teaser campaign that’ll culminate in a full reveal next spring. The first EV will go on sale in October 2026, and as we’ve seen in spy shots, it will not resemble any of Ferrari’s current products. The electric cavallino rampante will have vaguely hatchback proportions, but on a scale more in line with the bygone GTC4Lusso – think a short hood and spacious cabin, with four passenger doors à la the Purosangue but riding much closer to the ground.
The second EV from the company is but a glimmer in Enzo’s eye at this point, and Ferrari hasn’t released any information about its form factor or price point. We suspect it’ll be cheaper than its $500,000 big brother, but otherwise, it’s anyone’s guess what it’ll look like or how it will perform. We suspect it’ll do battle with the also-delayed Lamborghini EV, previewed by the Lanzador concept, which means it could be a sporty two-door coupe with a $300,000 price tag. As long as it looks and sounds like a Ferrari, we’ll consider it a success.
