BMW X7 Generations: All Model Years

Although the BMW X5 has been available with an optional third row in the past, the BMW X7 is the German giant’s first SUV with three rows of seating as standard. After first appearing on the scene for the 2019 model year, BMW updated the X7 four years in, giving us a facelifted version for the 2023 model year onwards. It’s this iteration of the X7 which still sits atop the BMW SUV family tree in 2025, as the brand’s most luxurious option.

Competition for the X7 primarily comes from Germany also, in the form of Audi’s three-row Q7, and the equally large and luxurious Mercedes-Benz GLS. Both of these premium SUVs sport a longer and more storied production history than the BMW X7, but BMW’s first-gen luxury SUV has been keen to impress since day one.

The BMW X7 is currently still in its first generation, although the model was facelifted in 2022.

2023-2025 BMW X7 G07 (1st Gen) Facelift

The X7 is BMW’s largest and flagship SUV, and while smaller SUV models from the brand have a tendency to focus on aggression and performance, the X7 is primarily designed to excel as a luxury car. The first-generation model was refreshed for the 2023 model year with a striking facelift. These BMW X7 model years featured the following major features:

  • Split-design headlights
  • Optional 23-inch alloy wheels
  • A new 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, which runs iDrive 8.5 software

BMW updated the X7’s engines for the mid-cycle refresh, with core, M, and Alpina models benefiting. The base xDrive40i model, which is powered by a boosted inline-six, received an extra 40 horses and 67 lb-ft of torque, sending outputs soaring to 375 and 398 respectively. The hotter V8 model’s name shifted from M50i to M60i, and BMW claimed that the updated model’s V8 and 48-volt hybrid powertrain was more efficient than ever before. The Alpina model, dubbed the XB7, is motivated by an even hotter V8, which received an 18-horsepower advantage over pre-facelift examples.

The full-size luxury SUV segment is more saturated than ever, but the X7 is still one of the best balanced vehicles on the market.

Apart from added driver assist content that’s bundled within an optional extra, we can’t tell where the added cash is going.

2019-2022 BMW X7 G07 (1st Gen)

The hotly anticipated three-row BMW X7 was first introduced for the 2019 model year. Two trim choices were available: the xDrive40i, which was powered by an inline-six with one turbocharger, and a V8-powered M50i, with two turbochargers. Little has changed to the range since, as BMW still only markets these two main trims, albeit the powerful option is now known as the M60i, rather than the M50i. Since launch, the X7 has been equipped as standard with all-wheel drive, which is typical of BMW’s larger SUV models. Being the brand’s flagship luxury SUV, the X7 was impressively equipped, with the following features offered from launch:

  • Standard two-axle air suspension with adjustable ride height
  • Multi-contour heated front seats with available ventilated and massage functions
  • Standard seven-seat layout, with an optional six-seat layout featuring captain’s chairs in the second row

Pre-facelift BMW X7 models sport very similar power and powertrains to the later facelifted cars, although updates were carried out during the mid-cycle refresh which saw efficiencies and outputs improve.
