10 Reliable Used BMWs That Won’t Let You Down
German brands tend to have a reputation for high quality and reliability, and despite whether that can be backed up with reliability scores and recall history or not, revered automakers like BMW are held in high regard. With a wide range of models in its lineup to suit a variety of driving needs, from SUVs to coupes and roadsters, BMW has plenty to offer for people looking to buy their next set of wheels – both as new cars, or on the used market.
BMW
BMW is a German luxury car and motorbike manufacturer and current owner of Mini, Rolls-Royce, and Alpina. With roots dating back to 1913 as Rapp Motorenwerke, it officially became Bayerische Motoren Werke in 1922 as a manufacturer of aircraft engines. BMW’s first car was built in 1928 when it built the Austin 7 under license from Dixi, which was called the BMW 3/15. BMW grew into a manufacturer of premium and luxury automobiles, launching iconic nameplates like the 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series, and is today known as one of the leading luxury automakers in the world, while the BMW M division is hailed as a leading manufacturer of performance cars.

Of course, as is the case with every automaker, some models enjoy a better reliability record than others, and this is even more important if you are buying a pre-owned car. Here are ten BMWs you will find on the used market that can make a fantastic choice if reliability is your top priority.
The list contains a selection of BMW models that have a good reliability record based on consumer reports. Cars are listed according to JD Power Reliability Score (for the model year with the highest score in each generation), from the lowest to the highest. When scores are equal, the number of recalls for that year is used to determine ranking.

The 3 Series’ fifth generation is widely regarded as a dependable model, combining relatively low running costs with reliability and good performance. One word of warning, however: while the engine lineup for this generation is mostly sturdy and reliable, the N54 engine is the weakest member of the family.
As BMW’s very first mass-produced turbocharged engine, it experienced some teething issues which mean reliability can sometimes be sketchy, so avoid N54-powered models when looking for a used 1 Series. The naturally aspirated N52, on the other hand, offers excellent reliability and, with proper maintenance, is unlikely to let you down.
2 2020 BMW X5 (4th Generation)

The X5 is another contender in the mid-size SUV category, slightly more spacious than its X3 sibling in both the passenger and cargo departments. Consumer Reports describes this generation of the X5 as “one of the best vehicles we’ve ever tested”, with the 2023 model obtaining a rare double 5/5 score in both the Owner Satisfaction and Reliability Verdict categories. Although the V8-powered versions are tempting, for maximum reliability the B58 turbocharged inline-six is the engine to go for. If you’re shopping on the used market but still want a recent model, and don’t mind spending a bit more, the X5 might be the right choice for you.
3 2016 BMW 3 Series (6th Generation)

Another 3 Series that offers great reliability at an affordable price point is the sixth-generation model; the 2016 car obtained a J.D. Power reliability score of 83/100. When shopping for a 3 Series for this generation, look for models with an N20 engine under the hood; this turbocharged inline-four unit has built up an excellent reliability record, with few issues reported as well as a good balance between efficiency and power.
Among the handful of issues reported, watch out for problems with the coolant system and the high-pressure fuel pump; these incidents have, however, not been frequent, so as long as your prospective purchase has been looked after well by its previous owners, you can rest easy.

The third most expensive entry on the list, the 5 Series’ seventh generation has recently come to an end with the 2024 model year, and plenty of examples are turning up on the used market that offer recent tech without breaking the bank.
While the V8-powered models certainly have more oomph, for top reliability, the 530i and 540i, equipped respectively with a turbocharged inline-four and inline-six, are the safest picks of the bunch. If you don’t mind spending a little more, and you want the best infotainment system available, look for a car from the 2021 model year or later: the 5 Series underwent a mid-cycle refresh that year, which came with an upgrade on the tech front.
5 2007 BMW 7 Series (4th Generation)

If you’re looking for a luxury sedan on the used market that won’t let you down, the 7 Series’ fourth generation (E65) could be the way to go: providing a combination of comfort, performance, and reliability, this model has built itself a strong reputation. The 2007 model earned itself a J.D. Power Reliability Rating of 85/100.
The fourth-gen 7 Series was also ahead of its time when it comes to safety tech, with advanced driver assistance systems on board that were not commonplace in other vehicles even at a similar price point. Some owners have reported issues with the suspension and the iDrive infotainment system. However, these are not frequent occurrences.
6 2022 BMW X3 (3rd Generation)

If you have access to a slightly bigger budget, and the used BMW you’re looking for is a practical mid-size SUV, look no further than the third-generation X3. This generation has only just come to an end, with the fourth-gen X3 having been revealed in June and going on sale for the 2025 model year.
The third-gen X3 enjoys a good reliability record and is equipped with all the bells and whistles you would expect of a recent model, while still offering a considerable financial saving (a new X3 will set you back a minimum of $49,500 plus a $1,175 destination fee). If having up-to-date tech is an important factor in your purchase, this may be a model for you to consider.
7 2007 BMW Z4 (1st Generation)

Looking for a used sports car that will provide fun without leaving you stranded at the side of the road? A Z4 from the model’s first generation could be a fantastic choice: having obtained good scores on J.D. Power over the years (the 2007 model got a 85/100 general score, although the specific reliability score was not available), the first-gen Z4 offers a blend of dependability and performance. With a design that has aged well and still feels modern, a comfortable interior and an engaging driving experience thanks to precise, sharp handling, the first-gen Z4 could just be the roadster you’re looking for.

The current generation of the 4 Series enjoys a very good reliability record, with the 2022 model in particular faring well: Consumer Reports gives it a 4/5 Reliability Verdict and a 5/5 Owner Satisfaction rating. Thanks to the wide range of body styles available, the 4 Series is an extremely versatile model, which can be configured in a variety of ways to suit your driving needs. The variants powered by the B58 engine, known for being a stalwart of reliability, are equipped with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, for maximum efficiency and reduced fuel costs.

The first generation of the 2 Series is powered by a lineup of engines with a good reputation for reliability, equipped with a turbocharger and mild hybrid system for maximum efficiency. Only two years after the model’s introduction, the 2016 2 Series bagged a J.D. Power reliability rating of 84/100. The 2 Series is also dependable on the tech front, with sturdy electronics that have a low rate of malfunctions and glitches. The interior is rich with high-quality materials that have stood the test of time without looking dated.

Shopping for a used BMW that’s compact, reliable and won’t break the bank? The 1 Series’ first generation is a great place to start. Combining agile, small dimensions with sporty looks and a comfortable, high-quality interior, a used 1 Series can be an excellent entry point into the brand for BMW fans on a budget.
Once again, though, the same issue experienced by the 3 Series presents itself: beware of N54-powered models when shopping around, as they can be the least reliable in the family. This does mean you’ll miss out on the performance-focused 135i model, however if reliability is more important to you than performance, it is a worthy trade-off.
