Moss will disappear from driveways ‘in a couple of days’ with 50p tip

If you’re trying to tackle a moss-infested driveway hiding under shady trees, a solution is here. Fans of cleaning guru Mrs Hinch have shared their nifty trick to blitz away the green menace.

Lovers of the Instagram sensation, Sophie Hinchliffe, have been buzzing on social media with their latest household remedy. It’s aimed at making driveways look immaculate once again and removing that pesky moss, which is an eyesore and a health hazard. Mrs Hinch’s loyal following, which now exceeds a staggering five million fans, is always eager to share their tidying hacks on social media.

Taking to one of many Mrs Hinch-inspired Facebook groups, one person wrote: “Hi, [what’s the] best product to remove moss from a tarmac driveway? [I] will also use a pressure washer but it doesn’t shift it by itself!”

Plenty of solutions flooded in, but topping the list was the humble household washing powder.

One person advised: “My mum has recently used washing powder and then the hose pipe on sprinkle to water it in. Within a couple of days, the moss turned brown and could be swept up.”

Another confirmed the trick worked, saying: “Bio soap powder definitely works, have done it myself.”

Another suggested: “I read the other week to put biological soap powder on it and leave for rain to wash away. Haven’t tried it so can’t endorse it but worth a try.”

Household staple washing powder is a go-to for many, but if you haven’t got it at home, it’s readily available in local supermarkets.

Asda is currently selling a box of washing powder for £2.23. Given that you only need a few scoops to douse any moss patches, it works out at around 50p each time you want to use this method.

Mrs Hinch enthusiasts have also put forward alternatives to tackle this pesky moss, ranging from salt and soda crystals to bleach, warm water and scrubbing with a broom.

One person offered this tip: “Sprinkle salt on damp moss. It will kill it, and then you can just sweep up dead moss.”

In agreement, another said: “Salt will kill it. It will take three to four days.”

Another recommendation came from a fellow group member, who said: “Soda crystals, sprinkle on, and leave for two days. Then wash off with a stiff broom. It lasts up to two years.”

Someone else suggested: “You could use bleach in a bucket of warm water.”
