Kia Spotted Testing The Affordable Crossover America Deserves

Kia’s quirky and compact EV2 is currently under development. The smaller but boxier sibling to the EV6 was revealed earlier this year in concept car form, and it promised some very cool features. Beyond the baby-EV9 styling, which seems to have put the big SUV’s face in a copier set to scale it down to two-thirds size, it also offered more front legroom than any car we’ve ever seen.

As part of the development process, Kia has to take it on the road for testing. That’s where the CarBuzz spy photographers can capture it. Now they’ve spotted the Kia EV2 electric with what appear to be production-ready head and tail lamps, showing that the compact is close to the concept and closer to going on sale.

Cool Concept Lights Are Making It To Production

The Kia EV2 Concept got a set of EV9-like headlights. A large outer LED lamp curved back into the fender and hood line, while a second set of accent lights sat inboard of the main.

It looks like the inner accent lights have made it to the production car, and they’re largely intact. They aren’t identical, but they do seem to be both functional and futuristic-looking. The outer lamp has been altered even more, but that’s not a surprise. The two new visible LED projector lamps are similar to what you’ll find on lower-spec models of the EV9 and make a lot more sense on this EV, which is expected to come in at around $30,000.

At the back, the very low-slung concept car taillights have made the leap to the prototype. The just-above-the-bumper location is unusual, but the look of the lights stays very true to the concept.

Some of the coolest features of the concept, though, are not on the EV2. Or at least not on this EV2.

Coach Doors, Message Display Missing From Prototype

Those include the little message display at the base of the front windows. On the concept, a display near the A-pillar let you give a friendly message to other cars or passers-by. Or even, potentially, a note indicating when you were coming back to a charging car. It’s probably not a surprise this is missing, but it’s still a shame.

The other missing feature is the coach-opening rear doors. The rear-hinged doors of the concept EV2 opened up to help make the cabin feel even larger and more accessible. This was helped by a rear seat cushion that folded upward like the back seat of a pickup and front seats that could slide rearward to meet them.

With the seats slid back, the EV2 promised to have the most legroom of any car. The prototype car spotted in the photos shows a conventional rear-mount door handle, suggesting that the back doors open the normal way. Plus, we can see the thick pillar with a seatbelt mounting in the image showing the passenger side.

Even on a small car like this, that center pillar adds significant impact protection and strength to a vehicle. It’s likely that removing it would have been very cost-prohibitive and would have added other design compromises. At least the change doesn’t rule out the sliding seats. Not completely, anyway.

The Kia EV2 is expected to start at around $30,000 when it goes on sale in 2026. The electric range for the entry model is expected to be around 250 miles.
