You’d be forgiven for mistaking a 2025 Jeep Compass for a 2023 Cherokee and vice versa. Though the Cherokee is 10 inches longer, slim LED headlights, the signature Jeep seven-slotted grille, and general exterior styling are shared. Both models come with 17-inch wheels as standard, and both have the option to equip a dual-pane sunroof (it comes standard on higher trims). Powertrain and Performance: Four Cylinders Ready For Off-Roading

The Jeep Crossover As A Daily Driver

Every 2025 Jeep Compass is powered by a turbocharged 2.0L inline-4 rated for 200 hp. Mated to an 8-speed automatic, AWD is standard as are 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season rubber. With fuel economy ratings of 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined, the Compass is the efficiency champ of this Jeep family battle. But its 2,000-pound tow rating can’t compete with the 4,000-lb rating of the Cherokee.

For the final Jeep Cherokee model year, it was offered in just two trims and the base Altitude Lux came with a 180-hp 2.4L inline-4. It paired with a 9-speed automatic to spin all four wheels and was good for 21 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg combined. Like the Compass, it offers Auto, Snow, and Sand/Mud modes, but adds a unique Sport mode to the mix. .

Jeep Crossovers For The Trail

Those interested in off-roading with the Jeep Compass or Cherokee should look to the Trailhawk variants. In both cases, a lifted suspension, underbody skid plates, all-terrain tires, and recovery hooks combine to transform these crossovers from mall cruisers to Trail Rated Jeeps. With the Cherokee, the Trailhawk model also comes with a more powerful turbocharged engine.

Jeep fits both Trailhawk models with a modified Active Drive AWD system that offers a low range and that can lock the rear axles for improved traction when it gets really rough. The Compass comes with a seven-inch central touchscreen and the option for a 10.1-inch unit, while the Cherokee is only offered with an 8.4-inch display.

Heated seats are standard only for the Cherokee, while ventilated front seats, a panoramic moonroof, and wireless phone charging are optional across the board, as is leather upholstery. Key differences include Traffic Sign Recognition and Active Driving Assist – a semi-autonomous driving system – on the Compass that cannot be had with the Cherokee. Both do offer an automated parking system, however.

Depreciation Levels The Playing Field

The 2025 Jeep Compass starts at $25,900 for a Sport model and ranges up to a Trailhawk trim for $32,395. These prices, which exclude destination, would have dramatically undercut the Jeep Cherokee were it still a new vehicle for sale. In 2023, the Cherokee was offered in Altitude Lux guise for $37,695 or Trailhawk for $41,295.

However, according to the Fair Purchase Price Today values published by Kelley Blue Book, those two Compass models should cost closer to $25,811 and $27,680, respectively, in 2025. But is it worth saving some money to get into an older Jeep crossover? It’s certainly smart from a financial perspective, but is not without its pitfalls.

Verdict: Smaller Is Better

Although the Jeep Cherokee would seem to be the better crossover versus its Compass counterpart given a higher original price point and larger footprint, it’s simply not the case. Really, the biggest case to be made for the Cherokee is the Trailhawk model. But not because it has better off-roading creds, because it has a far more powerful engine than what the Compass offers – some might prefer this, and the uprated towing it offers.

Otherwise, the Compass is more fuel efficient, effectively matches the Cherokee on pricing when depreciation is accounted for, and has better tech like wireless smartphone mirroring. Also, the Compass somehow manages more cargo space with the back seats folded down all while being easier to maneuver in tight spaces.
