The Only Cars Faster Than The Ford Mustang GTD At The Nurburgring

We finally have a Nürburgring lap time for the Ford Mustang GTD. 6:57.685 minutes around the famed 12.9-mile Green Hell, a first for any American manufacturer and the sixth stock street-legal production car to set a lap time below seven minutes.

Few stock production cars can set a lap time under seven minutes. Some of the most prolific names in the supercar arena have tried and fallen short. Ford has achieved this feat, and the automaker says it will try again. For now, though, these cars have quicker lap times than the Ford Mustang GTD.

In 2022, a Porsche 911 GT3 with the Manthey Racing kit set a lap time around the Nürburgring Nordschleife of 6:55.737, which was 4.19 seconds quicker than the standard Porsche 911 GT3. Manthey Racing has long since been renowned for refining Porsche’s best and brightest with the German brand’s permission and cooperation. In fact, Porsche owns 51% of Manthey.

The 911 range, specifically the GT3 and the GT3 RS counterpart, received the most attention from the German brand, which often offers an evolution from the vanilla Porsche sports car experience. The modus operandi of Manthey Racing’s products seeks to sharpen its track capabilities, improve already capable aerodynamic elements, imbue it with record-shattering performance, and introduce more aggressive bodywork.

One of the German brand’s more recent offerings for the Porsche 992.1 generation 911 range is a kit for the Porsche 911 GT3 model. The new components offered by Manthey Racing are purposed to improve the GT3’s racetrack capabilities, which include a new rear wing, new diffuser, and new wheel designs, all to improve downforce generation, turbulence reduction, and chip away at the model’s curb weight. The Manthey kit also introduced a new braking system that reduces brake fade, a new suspension system that significantly improves the dynamism of the GT3, and a handful of other visual elements to distinguish the GT3 MR from the standard 911 GT3.

In 2020, Mercedes-AMG announced its potent AMG GT Black Series, the sixth rendition of the Black Series nameplate, lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife and became the fastest production car around the hallowed German circuit. Veteran racing driver Maro Engel was at the helm of the extremely powerful coupe, managing to sling the Black Series model through the Kesselchen section of the track at 168 mph and even more than that down the Döttinger Hönhe straight, which Engel commented was much quicker than the GT3 race car he was accustomed to.

Several elements throughout the coupe allowed it to achieve such an impressive lap time. This includes a highly capable suspension system that consists of coilover suspension complimented by adaptive damping and adjustable anti-roll bars. Aside from its suspension system, the AMG GT Black Series physique consists of several carbon fiber components, including a long hood with two large exhausts guiding warm air flowing from the slanted radiator out of the engine compartment. Hardware aside, its electrical systems, like the adjustable nine-stage AMG traction control system, were paramount in the model’s ability to effectively transfer its 720 hp from its twin-turbocharged V8 engine down to the 12.9 miles of tarmac.

3 Porsche 992.1 911 GT3 RS

Porsche’s athletic 911 GT3 has set an impressive lap time around the Nürburgring, but the Porsche 911 GT3 RS could shave off more than ten seconds from that lap time, securing a lap time of 6:49.328 minutes. The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is the most track-capable and performance-focused model in the automaker’s latest product generation. The 911 GT3 RS is far removed from the non-RS 911 model and is distinguished by the plethora of technology and experience that Porsche has derived from motorsport.

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is uncompromising in its inclination toward outright performance. To further its dynamism, it utilizes Porsche’s Active Suspension Management system, which continuously adjusts the damping force; Porsche’s Stability Management system, which helps maintain stability in dynamic driving scenarios; and Porsche’s Torque Vectoring Plus system, which electronically controls and regulates the variable rear differential lock. The model could set a lap time of 6:44.848 minutes on the shorter standard track. Manthey Racing has recently introduced a kit for the 911 GT3 RS that, like the standard GT3, benefits from significantly improving its aerodynamic, suspension, and chassis elements.

We can’t wait to see how many seconds it shaves off the GT3 RS’ already impressive lap time.

2 2021 Porsche 911 GT2 RS

Nürburgring lap time: 6:43.30

Engine

3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged, flat-six

Horsepower

700 hp @ 7,000 rpm

Torque

553 lb-ft @ 2,500-4,500 rpm

0-60

2.7 seconds

Porsche’s 911 GT2 RS was and still is, a ludicrous sports coupe that, unlike its GT3 cousins, featured a 3.8-liter power unit that relied on variable-geometry turbochargers. It is still the most powerful rendition of a road-going 911 and, despite being from the previous 991.2 generation, has a level of performance that has not waned at all. Its powerful engine, paired with a highly capable chassis, allowed the GT2 RS to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:43 minutes, which allowed it to secure the title of the fastest production car, beating the previous lap record by 4.747 seconds.

Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires transferred the extreme power output to the ground while the chassis maintained poise through the various corners of the Nürburgring Nordschleife. One of the most notable aspects of the GT2 RS’ physique is its large rear wing, its myriad of vents positioned from nose to tail, and a front fascia with large air inlets.

Porsche is currently working on the next-generation GT2 RS, which needs to be something special if it wants to beat the current record holder.

The Fastest American Cars To Ever Lap The Nurburgring

Ford is pushing the Mustang GTD to set a sub-7-minute lap time around the Nürburgring. These are ten American cars that have already set a lap time.

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS’s performance level could compete with the McLaren 720S and the potent Corvette Corvette ZR1 from the previous generation. It could also secure a record-setting lap time around the Nürburgring and etch its name into the lap time leaderboard at the Road America circuit. If a power-laden engine wasn’t enough, the GT2 RS’ performance was further improved by adding a Manthey Racing kit.

As a high-output turbocharged race-ready 911 that sends all of its power to the rear wheels, the GT2 RS is the GTD’s closest rival. You can bet Porsche will be watching the GTD and its return to the Nürburgring very closely. It has a reputation to uphold, getting beat by a Mustang won’t look good.

1 Mercedes-AMG ONE

The Mercedes-AMG ONE is the first and only road car to set a lap time below 6:30 minutes. In 2022, it set a 6:35-minute lap time around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, and just two years later, the production model returned to the famed German circuit to break its record and become the fastest production car in the world. Once again, Maro Engel was the helmsman of a record-setting model to lap the Green Hell. According to Mercedes, the first attempt using the Mercedes-AMG ONE was hampered by less-than-ideal weather conditions, meaning some parts of the Nürburgring were damp. The track conditions were ideal for the recent attempt, allowing Engel to extract the most from the German road-legal F1-inspired car.

During this attempt, Engel had to balance the Mercedes-AMG ONE’s Energy Flow Control system with energy recuperation gained by coasting through certain parts of the track. A better implementation of the car’s DRS also contributed to its improved lap time. Although the Mercedes-AMG ONE currently holds the title of the fastest production car around the Nürburgring, many capable and potentially record-breaking models still have yet to set a lap time. The Rimac Nevera range recently saw the introduction of a track-obsessed variant. The Aston Martin Valkyrie might be a likely choice for a nameplate that could beat the AMG ONE’s time. We also hope the new additions to the GT3 RS, through the Manthey Racing kit, will close the gap between its time and the AMG ONE.
