The $25,000 Tesla You’ve Dreamed Of Is Finally Here

Key Takeaways

  • Hertz is selling off 20,000 EVs at appealing prices post-electric vehicle commitment reversal.
  • Late-model Tesla Model 3s can be had for as little as $22,000, although mileages are rather high.
  • Drawbacks include higher mileage and wear, but Hertz offers warranties, buy-back guarantees, financing, and a 115-point inspection.

Once committed to offering electric vehicles in its rental fleet, Hertz has since changed its mind and is trying to get rid of ex-rental cars at incredibly low prices. Waiting for that sub-$25,000 Tesla? Well, it’s here, and we’ve got Hertz to thank, not Elon Musk. Since the beginning of the year, the company has been trying to unload 20,000 EVs from its fleet, reports CNBC.

That represents nearly a third of Hertz’s electric vehicles. Sales of new electric cars have declined in recent months, with consumers favoring hybrids and PHEVs for several reasons, namely lower purchasing costs and the practicality of a gas-powered engine. However, if cost is a concern, Hertz is willing to make an incredible deal for late-model Teslas.

Some Incredible Deals To Be Had

A brief glimpse at the Hertz Car Sales website shows several tempting deals. We found a 2023 Model 3 with 82,922 miles for $20,872. A MY2022 Model 3 with 79,461 miles is also available for $22,538. Those are seriously tempting prices – not even a Corolla Hybrid can be purchased for this money. Then again, these cars have covered great distances. But lower mileage examples are available if you’re willing to spend a little more.

Examples with less than 30,000 miles on the clock can be purchased for just over $26,000. That’s an incredible deal for reasonable mileage. To put it into perspective, the facelifted (and much improved) Model 3 has a starting price of $38,990. A 2023 Model 3 with 28,831 miles for $26,523 sounds like a great deal. A Hertz spokesperson told CNBC, “Our EVs can be found nationwide in most major metros and averaging around $25,000.” And if you don’t want a Tesla, Hertz is also offloading EVs from other brands, such as Volvo and Mercedes-Benz.

But Before You Run Off To Buy A Hertz Tesla…

Of course, there are drawbacks to buying a vehicle from a rental company. For one, mileage is higher than usual. There’s also no way of telling how a car has been treated; rental cars tend to be abused and driven harder than privately owned vehicles. This includes how the interior is treated, which means there could be more wear than expected for the age. However, all Hertz cars receive a 115-point inspection and a 12-month/12,000-mile limited powertrain warranty. Hertz doesn’t mention whether it checks battery health during the inspection, but there is a seven-day/250-mile buy-back guarantee for added peace of mind.

Tesla failed to deliver half of the 100,000 vehicle order from Hertz.

Moreover, Hertz Car Sales also offers vehicle financing and takes trade-ins, which means customers can get a great deal on a low-mileage electric car. Let’s not forget that certain states offer a $4,000 tax credit for certain used EVs, so the potential for a great deal is high. If you’d rather wait for Tesla’s long-promised low-MSRP EV, you’ll be immobile for a long time. Tesla initially had plans to develop a small car but reportedly scrapped those in favor of robotaxi development. However, more affordable, decontented models could be on the way, although when exactly remains to be seen.
